Municipal holiday
Kočevje celebrates its municipal holiday on 3 October, in memory of the Assembly of the Delegates in Kočevje that took place on the first three days of October 1943 in the Sokolski dom.
The Assembly of the Delegates of the Slovene Nation was the first representative body of a nation that was directly elected during a war, even the first such body in Europe. Its decisions formed the legal basis for national authority on Slovene territory. The Assembly also elected the highest representatives of the nation, the Slovene National Liberation Committee (SNOO), which was the first Slovene parliament established by the partisans. By declaring statehood and forming the first Slovene parliament, the Slovene people finally met all the criteria to form a state and become a modern nation. And all this happened in Kočevje.
